Focaccia is a traditional Italian flatbread that is known for its light, airy texture and delicious savory toppings. Ingredients:

  • 500g (4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 10g (2 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 300ml (1 1/4 cups) warm water
  • 10g (1 1/2 tsp) salt
  • 50ml (1/4 cup) olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 sprigs rosemary, chopped

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the bowl and mix to form a dough.
  3. Knead the dough for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic, then place it in a greased bowl.
  4. Cover the bowl with a damp towel and let the dough rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F). Grease a baking sheet with olive oil.
  6. Punch the dough down and spread it out on the prepared baking sheet, pressing your fingers into the dough to create dimples.
  7. Sprinkle the minced garlic and chopped rosemary over the top, then drizzle with more olive oil.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the focaccia is golden and crispy on the edges.
  9. Remove from the oven, let it cool slightly, and slice.

Additional Variations:

  • Cheese Focaccia: Add shredded Parmesan, mozzarella, or goat cheese on top of the dough before baking for a cheesy twist.
  • Tomato & Olive Focaccia: Top with cherry tomatoes, Kalamata olives, and fresh basil before baking.
  • Caramelized Onion Focaccia: Saute onions in olive oil until golden and sweet, then top the dough with the onions before baking.
