Pita Bread Recipe – Soft Flatbread with a Pocket

Pita bread is a soft, round flatbread that puffs up during baking, creating a pocket perfect for stuffing with fillings. This homemade pita bread recipe is soft and chewy, perfect for sandwiches or dipping.

Pita bread is a staple in many cuisines and is incredibly versatile. The bread’s signature pocket makes it perfect for stuffed sandwiches, but it’s also delicious as a side for hummus or grilled meats.

  • 500g (4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • 10g (2 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 300ml (1 1/4 cups) warm water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Stir to form a dough, then knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 230°C (450°F). Place a baking stone or baking sheet in the oven to heat.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 portions. Roll each into a ball, then flatten into discs about 1 cm thick.
  7. Place the discs on the hot baking sheet and bake for 5-7 minutes, until the pitas puff up.
  8. Remove from the oven and cool slightly before cutting.

Tips & Variations:

  • Tip: If your pita breads don’t puff up, ensure the dough is properly proofed and your oven is preheated well. A baking stone will also help achieve the perfect puff.
  • Variation: Add herbs like rosemary or thyme to the dough for a flavorful twist. You can also make whole wheat pita bread by replacing half of the white flour with whole wheat flour.
